A snow day in NYC, 2010, set to a recording of my song “Cycle” from the same year.

“Cycle” is one of those songs I haven’t played in years, but I was playing it all the time around 2010-’11, both solo and in the bands I played in at my high school in those years. There were a bunch of different recordings of it that appeared on now out-of-print albums of mine from that time, including Rainbow in Santa Cruz and Pizza Carbonara.

I think I played this song so many times that it’s kind of still stuck in my head on some level; when the Ava Max song “Sweet but Psycho” came out years later, I just assumed for some years that the line was “sweet but a cycle”, because of how this song of mine from 2010 was still embedded in some part of my brain. It was only when a drag artist in NYC showed me a video of a drag performance that referenced this song that I realized it was actually “sweet but a psycho”. I mean, both of these songs are essentially about ableism and patriarchal violence; so maybe either interpretation kinda works?

This was part of a series of short videos I made in this vein throughout the year 2010, with various happenings in NYC set to some of the music I was making at the time. The first one was Blizzard, which I shot at the end of 2009 and released in 2010.
