Love Letters is a short film I made in 2014, continuing from a multimedia project I started in 2011 that set interviews, poetry, and dialogue I recorded on audio cassette to live experimental music I made.

The multimedia project was inspired by my song “The Love Letters” that appeared on my now out-of-print 2011 album When it Rains. This song is now more commonly known as “Love Letter”, as it appears on my 2016 album Outa / Orda.

One particular performance of this project in 2012 at Brooklyn’s Goodbye Blue Monday involved me running heart-shaped pieces of paper through a paper shredder while on stage, and sampling that with a drum microphone that I looped and created an ambient soundscape of paper shredders with, to accompany the voices on the cassette. Then, in the middle of the performance, when the clock struck midnight, my friend Bobby suddenly appeared on stage and began celebrating his birthday, by opening empty gift boxes and shouting Lil Kim verses.

The short film takes off from where the performance project left off, and combines poetry by Mark Statman and myself, and a monologue from Gani Parrott, with a pretty diverse collection of video footage by myself interspersed throughout to tell the story, along with some early live video footage of my songs “Cherry” and “Buddha”, the latter featuring Bob Black on bass and Stu “Chicken Leg” Richards on drums.

“Dexter” Dan Cohen also appears in the movie as my harmonica player, and the performance artist Crazy has a cameo as “You”.

Love Letters was originally screened at NYC’s Hakker Short Film Festival in 2014, and later released online.
